Type: Experience
My Role: Lead design & art direction
Agency: Expology
Experience how the finest in Norwegian engineering have overcome the forces of nature and created innovation for a greater good. The oil and gas industry has contributed substantially to Norwegian innovation and Aker Solutions has been a leading innovative force.
Expology was responsible for the concept development and production of Engineerium, which showcase the best examples of engineering and technological science in general and Aker Solutions´ view on innovation. The centre consists of 2,000 m2 and invites visitors to experience the oil and gas industry through interactive installations, historical models, a social learning game, a 3D visualisation centre, and an amphitheatre with recording and movie capabilities.
In 2014, we developed a visitor guide for Engineerium. This is an app that gives the visitors more information about the 37 installations in the centre as well as in-depth knowledge about the history of the Aker companies. The app also makes it possible for visitors to take part in an interactive game about energy.
Concept
Based on Aker Solutions original logo, the aim was to create a spatial interpretation. Using traditional brand elements was not an option since Engineerium also should be a place for competing brands to host their products. The precence of the Aker brand was still desired. We explored the 'power of two' - with the geometric square progression 1, 2, 4, 8, 16, 32 etc in 3D space. Every furniture, sculpture, grid, patterns and digital design always followed the 'power of two'.
Spatial Design
The spatial design is where the cube fractals has the most impact. By following this strict rule, allows for applying different textures and materials while still maintain visual coherence. The illustration below shows the amount a material used in proportion to other materials.
The fractal grid was used on flat surfaces, either as LED light patterns or as a grid for layout.
Orange and blue are the main colours used in the exhibition. The orange represents the Aker Solution part of the exhibit while blue represents Energy Lab.
Branded environment
The Aker Solutions section of Engineerium. Here the visitors can learn about Aker Solutions through an interactive timeline, learn engineering through Aker Solutions innovative products and services. Bouyancy, viscosity, compression etc.
Energy Lab
Hey there, this is the default text for a new paragraph. Feel free to edit this paragraph by clicking on the yellow edit icon. After you are done just click on the yellow checkmark button on the top right. Have Fun!
Installation: Evolution
Interactive timeline of Aker Solutions' history divided into three parts: Historic, present & future.
Engineering Challenge
A game developed utilising every aspect of Engineerium. School classes are invited to solve engineering challenges. The installations are mounted with QR scanners - the students are guided around the exhibition with their portable devices trying to solve their task. Doing science experiments, interview engineers, research are just a few of the tasks they have to face.
